1.       Don't panic. You can do your own basic computer diagnostic troubleshooting.

2.     Take detailed notes and try to reproduce the problem. Then write down any errors. Include information about anything out of the ordinary that you hear or see that may be related to the problem.

3.     Determine if the problem(s) persist after you shutdown/restart the computer. It is amazing how many PC issues are resolved with a simple reboot!

4.     Maintain good records regarding any service and/or support. It is in your best interest to keep excellent records of issues, service, and support performed on all of your computers. I also recommend that all of the information related to your computer(s) be kept together in a safe dry place.  It is also a good practice to keep track of all software CDs that you have purchased (along with the installation codes). This will be very helpful in the event that you need to restore your software due to a system crash or hard drive replacement.

5.     Keep your computer(s) current with the latest system updates and patches. For security reasons, this step is especially important if you are using the internet.

6.     Make sure that you have active updated virus protection. Include spyware protection if you are an internet user.  There are several software packages that will give you anti-virus and spyware protection.  Be advised that most virus protection and spyware sniffing software require annual renewal.

7.     Make plans to backup your personal files regularly to a storage device of your choice. In the event that you hard drive fails, you do not want to be vulnerable to losing your important data. It can be very costly (i.e. hundreds to thousands of dollars) to have data recovered from a failed hard drive. So, it's always better to be safe than sorry.

8.     Familiarize yourself with basic computer support terminology. Make sure that you understand the lingo when communicating with a computer support tech. This is vital for you to relay the proper message to a support technician regarding any computer issues you are experiencing.

9.     Keep your computer away from moisture, extreme heat, and free from dust. It is strongly recommended that you do not eat or drink around your system.  It is best to keep you computer in a cool (but not freezing) place.

10.  Only delete files that you have created on your system (unless you are positive that they are not needed). This will prevent you from removing an important system or software file by accident.
